Republic of Ireland vs Switzerland 06/09/19

6 September 2019

The Republic of Ireland will look to post their third consecutive home win in the 2020 UEFA European Cup qualifying campaign when they take on Switzerland at Aviva Stadium this week.

The hosts have enjoyed a bright start to their qualifying campaign, pulling off three wins in the opening three outings in Group D (W3, D1). Apart from a 2-0 home triumph over dead-last Gibraltar, the other two victories the current group toppers have secured have ended with the same 1-0 scoreline in their favor. However, the Boys in Green have endured mixed fortunes at home lately, clinching just three wins in their last eight home matches in all competitions (W3, D2, L3). The one thing that has highlighted those games is a lack of entertainment, as seven of those matches produced under 2.5 goals with just two seeing both teams score.

Meanwhile, the visitors have failed to build on a 2-0 away win over Georgia in the Group D opener, playing out a 3-3 home draw with Denmark last time out. Although a stalemate seems like a most likely outcome here, none of Switzerland’s five competitive trips in the post-World Cup period has ended in a draw (W2, L3). Three of their last four competitive away games have produced over 2.5 goals and seen both teams score. But, due to their slow start to the game, Vladimir Petkovic’s men have struggled to find the net in the first half in each of those matches going on to score a total of six goals later on.
